The First World War transformed our understanding of how war impacts the mind. Psychiatric casualties were seen on a mass scale and with a severity that medics were completely unfamiliar with. Military leaders started to pay more attention to the work of psychiatrists, as they realised that they were losing servicemen from their ranks at an alarming rate.
