During this time of temporary upheaval in Bodmin, we think it’s important to remind ourselves of what makes Bodmin such a fantastic town.
Bodmin is one of the oldest towns in Cornwall, and St Petroc’s is Cornwall’s largest church (after Truro Cathedral, of course!). In fact, the tower of St Petroc’s used to reach 150 feet in height, until in 1699 it was struck by lightning and destroyed.
In Cornish History, Bodmin is a hugely important place. Once the County Town of Cornwall (an honour which it debatably still holds), Bodmin was also the centre of three Cornish uprisings: the Cornish rebellion led by Michael An Gof and Thomas Flamank in 1497, the Warbeck uprising a few months later in 1497, and the Prayer Book Rebellion in 1549. In fact, the mayor of Bodmin, Nicholas Boyer, was actually hanged for rebellion in 1549.
The historic Riding & Heritage Day event is an annual tradition still going strong today, which is celebrated in the heart of town. It was first documented in the 1460’s – this is earlier than the first documented mention of Padstow’s May Day!
Aside from it’s incredible history, traditions and architecture, Bodmin boasts some amazing attractions – in fact, the town has five attractions within the town itself, and many more situated on the outskirts: this is more than any other town in Cornwall! There are so many things to do in Bodmin, no matter if it’s bright and sunny or a rainy day in Cornwall, Bodmin really does have something for everyone.
Bodmin Railway is a wonderful heritage railway and the only full-sized steam railway in Cornwall!
Bodmin Jail was previously Cornwall’s only prison (now thankfully an amazing visitor attraction!)
Bodmin Town Museum has a fantastic collection of Cornish history.
Cornwall’s Regimental Museum is based in The Keep – the heart of military life in Cornwall for over 150 years.
Bodmin Beacon is an 84 acre Nature reserve right here on our doorstep.
Pencarrow House & Gardens is one of Cornwall’s beautiful stately homes, still lived in today by the Molesworth St Aubyn family.
The beautiful National Trust property, Lanhydrock House and Gardens is within walking distance from the town, as is the vibrant Cardinham Woods with its walking and cycle trails and wonderfully rustic Woods café.
Bodmin is an extraordinary town, and has the potential to be something truly amazing.
