During the Second World War women often crafted their own accessories from patterns published in newspapers and magazines which showed people how they could make their jewellery. Join Laura from Elby Brown Jewellery and learn metalsmithing techniques before creating your own sterling silver ring. This workshop is suitable for 16 years+ and beginners.
Make Do and Mend Display

Buying new clothes was rationed from June 1941 until 1949. Make Do and Mend was part of the government’s campaign encouraging people to repair, reuse and reimagine their existing clothes during the Second World War. Explore how those on the Homefront coped with limited rations and how this became a way of life in this family friendly display.

During the Second World War paper was in short supply. Salvage was launched to encourage the recycling of materials to aid the war effort.

Learn to Make a Rag Rug – Adult Workshop

During the Second World War rags weren’t thrown out as could be refashioned into something else, which included rugs! Join local rag rug maker John to learn how to use a bodger and create a small rug to take home. Suitable for beginners. All materials will be provided.

Learn to Crochet – Adult Workshop
Saturday 4 June, 1 – 3 pm
Have you always wanted to get hooked on crochet?
In this workshop Zillah will show you the basics and have you whipping up granny squares in no time! These can be used to make lots of different items including blankets, pillows, bags, and jumpers. Learn chain stitch, double crochet stitch, slip stitch, plus lots of tips and tricks to get you started.
All materials provided. Suitable for beginners.

Furniture Up-cycling Demonstration

A sustainable attitude applied to everything including furniture on the Home Front during the Second World War. This helped prevent wastage and increased appreciation of the value of belongings.
Join Sandy from Feral Furniture Designs for a demonstration of techniques that can be used to up-cycle furniture. Learn some basics, proper preparation, go to products, how to source the perfect piece, tools and tricks.
Make a Seedling Pot

During the Second World War people reduced, reused, and recycled wherever possible because of rationing and shortages. Join our friendly team to make your own biodegradable seedling pot from recycled newspaper to take home.
Visible Mending Workshop – Suitable for Age 9+ years

Join Sara and Sarah from The Repair Generations project for a visible mending workshop.
All materials will be provided although participants may want to bring an item of clothing that they’d like to embellish. Sewing skills aren’t necessary.

Fabric Scrap Brooch Workshop – Suitable for Age 16 years +

Make a brooch using fabric scraps with St Ives based textile artist Jo McIntosh. All workshop materials will be provided. Pre booking is essential as places are limited.
Our FREE events are not part of a museum visit, but the museum will be open if you would like to make that part of your day! Admission is great value at £7 for an adult annual pass and £3 for a child, which can be used as many times as you like for 12 months!
