Most people will be familiar with the rationing that was implemented in January 1940 and the coupon books that were issued to ensure that everyone had the same, but did you know that rationing had first been introduced during WW1?

By Mary Godwin, Museum Director. As part of the museum’s First World War commemorations, we want to improve the standard of display of Harry’s medals and other objects from DCLI soldiers of the Great War, in good time for the 2018 armistice centenary.
We know that if we are to attract enough visitors to make the museum financially viable and enable us to stay in our historic premises, as well as offering a superb museum, we need to bring the historic Keep building itself back to life.
Our Object of the Month for October is the hand drawn Sketch Map of the Battle of Corunna. This sketch map was made in July 1840 by Ensign Peter Hall of the 14th Regiment of Foot. At the time, an Ensign was the lowest rank of commissioned officer, and the ability to produce accurate field sketches – invaluable in battle – was one of the skills a young officer would be required to learn.
Our Object of The Month for September is the beautiful Commanding Officer’s Bugle. This ornate bugle has a special significance; it is decorated intricately with scrolls depicting the Battle Honours of the DCLI.

This eye-catching leaflet, appealing for Cornishmen to join the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, was created in August 1914, at the start of the First World War. The leaflet gives details of the kind of roles available in the Regiment and their potential earnings: for example, a Quartermaster, who supervised stores and distributed supplies, could make 9 shillings a day
