We like to think our museum is a friendly welcoming environment for all. However, we know there is always more we can do to make your experience more enjoyable, particularly for our neuro-divergent visitors. That is why we have introduced our monthly Saturday Soldiers: Autism Friendly Sessions. These relaxed openings and sensory driven sessions have been scheduled during the museum’s quieter times, to help keep audio stimuli to a minimum.
During each session, a pop up sensory room is instilled in one of our temporary exhibition spaces. Downstairs in the Serjeant’s Mess, there will also be object-handling sessions. These sessions take a more tactile approach to interacting with and learning about our collections as visitors are able to handle and even try on replica items from the first and second world war. Sensory integration and play activities will be set up in multiple spaces throughout the museum. (such as dressing up, lego, colouring, play doh and toy tanks).
On entering the museum, visitors can pick up a sensory map, museum trails and sensory bag at the reception.
