This week the museum was delighted to welcome General Sir Peter de la Billière. He originally enlisted as a Private in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry in 1952 and was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into Durham Light Infantry.
During his early career as an officer he served in Japan, Korea and Egypt with the regiment’s 1st Battalion. He was Director of the SAS during the Iranian Embassy siege, and Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in Operation Granby (the Gulf War).
The museum has a display dedicated to him, including a copy of an imposing portrait by David Poole. He is seen here in front of his portrait with museum trustee Gage Williams.
